The Royal Treatment: ‘Aladdin’ star Mena Massoud scores lead role in Netflix romance
Mena Massoud is no stranger to love stories, having played the titular character in 2019’s live-action remake of Aladdin.
Now, the Egyptian-Canadian actor is set to take on another romance role in Netflix’s The Royal Treatment, in which he’ll play protagonist Prince Thomas, reports industry publication Deadline.
The film, directed by Rick Jacobson and written by Holly Hester, also stars American actress Laura Marano, who plays Thomas’s love interest, Isabella.
It tells the story of the prince, who must marry for duty rather than love. Before the big royal wedding, salon owner Isabella gets the opportunity to do Thomas’s hair, with their meeting changing the course of both of their lives.
Though Aladdin grossed $1.05 billion at the global box office, in December 2019 Massoud admitted he hadn’t had a single audition since his breakout performance.
He did, however, have a part in 2019 Canadian thriller Strange But True, and scored a role in TV series Reprisal.

He also released his own vegan cookbook, Evolving Vegan, in September 2020, following the creation of his popular Instagram account.
Now, it seems things are picking up for the Cairo-born actor, who is currently in Egypt preparing to start filming for his first Egyptian movie, Fe Ez el Dohr(In Broad Light), written by Karim Soror and directed by Mark Adel.
While plot lines are yet to be revealed, it has been announced Massoud will star opposite Egyptian actress Myrna Noureldin.
Aladdin 2 is also in the works, helmed by The Gentlemen director Guy Ritchie. Will Smith, Massoud and Naomi Scott are all expected to reprise their roles as Genie, Aladdin and Jasmine.
A release date has yet to be confirmed for Aladdin 2 and the Netflix romance flick.
