First trailer for Cruella turns a Disney villain into Harley Quinn
Cruella De Vil, the puppy-killing antagonist of Disney’s 101 Dalmatians, is finally stealing the spotlight. And the first trailer for her standalone movie has extreme Harley Quinn/Birds of Prey vibes.
You might be thinking to yourself: Well gee, how did Cruella De Vil become the fur-loving, dog-murdering fashionista we all know and love to hate? Surely, you don’t just wake up one day and declare, “Yes, I will murder dogs for their delightful spotted fur and also model myself to look like a reanimated corpse with dramatic e-girl black-and-white hair before the invention of the internet!” There must be some escalation to Cruella De Vil’s entire schtick, right?
Well, Cruella — a live-action prequel about the notorious fashionista — dives into Cruella De Vil’s origins. “I wasn’t for everyone,” she says in voice-over in the first trailer. “I guess they were always scared that I’d be a psycho.” Cue maniacal laughter.
Taking place in 1970s London, the movie explores Estella De Vil’s slow descent into dog skin obsession. Frankly, it looks and sounds like something out of a psychological thriller instead of a Disney movie. Emma Stone stars as the villainess, with Emma Thompson as the head of a fashion house that hired her. Glenn Close is going to lose her mind.
Cruella is set to be released theatrically on May 28.
