Synopsis

This series is an adaptation of a cycle of novels by Philip Pullman that show us a strange parallel world. Almost all civilization is governed by the Magisterium – a reformed institution of the papacy – which controls all areas of life. There is theology instead of physics and steampunk instead of technology in that world full of many other oddities. For each person here, a part of the soul lives separately in the form of an animal that reflects his/her essence. A part of a child’s soul can be represented by any pet – however, as it matures, it takes on a permanent form. Lyra Belaqua, the His Dark Materials protagonist, is a bully orphan living in Oxford College. By the will of fate, she becomes that important part of this mechanism who is able to change this strange world. Lyra will face incredible adventures, heavy losses and a search for herself.

Interesting Facts

  • This series is far from the first adaptation of the famous trilogy. In 2007, a film based on the first novel was shown to the world. Warmly received by audiences and critics alike, it won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Unfortunately, due to the low box office, filming for the sequel was canceled.
  • According to a BBC poll, His Dark Materials trilogy is ranked third on the list of best books. At the same time, “The Lord of the Rings” and “Pride and Prejudice” take first and second places, respectively. Philip Pullman’s novel bypassed such popular books as Harry Potter, Winnie the Pooh, and War and Peace.
  • Philip Pullman’s new novel The Secret Commonwealth published in 2019. This is the second novel in the second trilogy about Liva Belaqui, and we hope that it will also be filmed.
  • According to Philip Pullman, Nicole Kidman was the best contender for the role of Mrs. Coulter, and she played her in the film. However, Ruth Wilson, star of “Luther” and “The Affair,” played the role in the series.
