The Good Liar

Synopsis

The date of two pensioners who met on the Internet turns into a real crime drama.

She is Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren), a former Oxford professor, widow and millionaire who is deeply lonely after the loss of her spouse.

He is Roy Courtney (Ian McKellen), an aged con man who charms and subsequently steals from older women.

It would seem that this is another story of a financial scam – but this time everything will not go according to plan. Who would have guessed that the fraudulent pensioner himself would be in danger this time around?

Interesting Facts

• Released on November 8, 2019 in the UK, “Good Liar” film has been made available to streaming platforms from January 31, 2020.
• Surprisingly, “Good Liar” is the first collaboration between Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren, British movie mastodons who have played together numerous times in the theater. By the way, both of them are members of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.
• Unlike the main actors, Bill Condon, the director of “Good Liar”, is American. He is also best known for his work on two films in the “Twilight” saga, “Beauty and the Beast”, a live-action remake of the Disney cartoon, and “Mr. Holmes”, a recently released film starring Ian McKellen as a retired detective. Incidentally, Condon directed the “Gods and Monsters” (1988) starring McKellen for which the actor was nominated for an Academy Award for the first time in his career. Condon received an Oscar for the screenplay for this film.
• It is noteworthy that before playing the roles of Magneto and Gandalf, Ian McKellen was known primarily as a theater actor specializing in Shakespeare’s plays. Now, he is preparing to take part in the filming of a modernized version of Hamlet.
