Synopsis

Mia Ackerland (Luna Wedler), a student with outstanding results in the study of genetics, enters the University of Freiburg, one of the best institutions of higher education in Germany. Here she met the same like-minded geneticists – it’s not a problem for them to create a mouse that glows in the dark or a vegetable that tastes like meat. Tanya Lorenz, a distinguished professor of genetics, is a role model for talented students. Although at first glance, it seems that Mia is happy to be in the circle of friends, to go to parties and conduct experiments on animals and plants. However, the girl set herself one another goal. She tries to find out more about the person who – in her opinion – is responsible for the death of her brother.

• Biohackers premiered on August 20, 2020 on the Netflix, and from that moment the series became available for viewing for the streaming service subscribers from all regions.
• Initially, the release of Biohackers was supposed to take place on April 30, 2020. However, according to Netflix executives, it is a bad idea to present a TV series about genetic experiments in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
• Biohackers were also produced by German companies, which are known for their work on The Dark, a series that became a real hit. The final season of The Dark premiered in June 2020.
• The series was filmed in a Munich studio and in the interiors of the University of Freiburg.
• To make the story told by The Biohackers look even more believable, German producers consulted with scientists in the field of biology and genetics. So, what is shown on the screen is more likely not a sci fi but what can happen if modern genetic technologies become generally available.
• Biohackers are another new collaboration between Netflix and Christian Ditter, German showrunner. The Girlboss comedy TV series, released in 2017 on the Netflix streaming service, was also directed by Ditter.
